Irving Gargoyle

The different gargoyles I sell called 'Irving' are based on a bass relief gargoyle located on a building on Irving Place in New York, New York.

Irving Place Gargoyle

The picture above is the gargoyle on Irving Place. This is actually not a gargoyle, as a gargoyle by definition is a waterspout — this is more properly called a grotesque, although in common usage the terms are often interchanged.

The above picture is one of the several different versions of 'Irving' that I sell on my website. You can see the resemblance. Pretty much all my pieces are free standing, so this gargoyle sculpture is a free standing piece.

Percy Gargoyle

I am rather fond of this guy, 'Percy' I call him.

Percy is a small resin piece, a gray patina with hand painted eyes.

Bronze Cranium (skull)

This is a new piece for the store, a bronze finished cranium. A skull without the jaw (mandible) is called a cranium.

This piece  is 5" tall, 7" from front to back, and is priced at $36, made of cold cast resin mixed with bronze for a metal look.

I like skulls, and I like this piece — I think it casts an 'eternal' or vintage look out to the viewer.

This guy is being created by special request, and then will be changed a bit perhaps — and I will then have him for sale!

Dedo Gargoyle

We sell the always popular Dedo gargoyle.

The "Legend" of Dedo
"It all began in Paris when the Notre Dame Cathedral was being built, rising majestically stone by stone towards the heavens. It was custom to top each structure with a menacing gargoyle, who protected the cathedral by warding off evil spirits.

Marie Therese, a nun from a tiny convent in Provence, disliked the evil-looking gargoyles on the new cathedral, sitting so close to the heavens.Disguised as a man, she trekked on foot to Paris, entered the work site, and quickly carved a small block into a lovable, protective creature. She placed her creature, with its pointy ears and human-like feet, on the highest roof, visible only to God Himself.

It was undiscovered for centuries until a small boy, lost in the labyrinthine structure, stumbled off a ledge and rolled down a roof into the arms of the littlest gargoyle, perched quietly on a ledge. Since that time, Marie Therese's creature was affectionately known as Little Dedo, the gargoyle with the crossed toes."

Meeker

This fine little guy we call 'Meeker.' He (or she) is a well cast gargoyle sculpture — designed and made right in the good ole USA.

Meeker is holding his treasure, protecting it.

This gargoyle is cast from gypsum cement and so it suitable for outdoor display. Meeker is about four inches tall, and is priced at $46.

Griffins at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, California

Villa Montalvo — the former estate of California Senator James Phelan — is a public park, arboretum and art gallery.

The griffin is used as a logo for Villa Montalvo. There are four large griffins on pillars flanking the road up to the grounds, and many of the signs are decorated with griffins.

The picture above is the entrance into Villa Montalvo. This shot shows the main sign by the road and in the background is one of the two griffins either side of the driveway, flanking the entrance.

This is the same griffin and the first picture, showing the pedestal that it is placed on.

About a mile up the road is another set of griffins on pedestals. These two griffins face into the road, different to the first set which face out, along side the road.

Villa Montalvo is a nice place in a beautiful location. Anyone in the area should put on their walking shoes and pay a visit. Most of the park and trails are free to visit.
