Gargoyles out in the Wild!

I was in Peru, and came across a building with some gargoyles that were within my iPhone camera range.

Gargoyle on Building in Arequipa, Peru
Here is the first of four shots. This building — like a lot of buildings in the central district of Arequipa — have a large interior courtyard accessible from the sidewalk through a gate. These gargoyles all were in this inner courtyard.

Gargoyle on Building in Arequipa, Peru
This one, the second photograph, was probably 20 feet or so from the gargoyle in the corner.

Gargoyle on Building in Arequipa, Peru
Another one!

Arequipa, Peru Gargoyle
Let's finish the tour of the gargoyles of Arequipa, Peru with this guy.

Beringer Winery Fountain's Gargoyle Face
Let's jump back to California, Northern California, up to Napa Valley. This fountain is at Beringer Winery in St. Helena in California's Napa Valley.

I kind of think the fountain head gargoyles look like the gargoyle that I sell that I call the Ugly Gargoyle.

Long Retired Gargoyle

I have been selling gargoyles for a long time!

One thing that happens over the years is that I get new work — either a new piece from an existing artist, or sometimes a new artist enters the flock! The flip side is that I also lose pieces. Either the artist decides to retire the gargoyle, sometimes the artist retires, and sometimes they decide to close up shop.

Max Gargoyle
The picture for this gargoyle is dated January 2004. I don't remember when I stopped selling this guy, I do remember that the company making them was sold and then closed. Max was a favorite of mine.

Mini Gargoyle
This little gargoyle sold very well. There was this guy, and a similar one styled like the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral gargoyle. This photo is dated November 2003.

Thirteen Century Notre Dame Gargoyle
This gargoyle is a model of one from the 13th century Notre Dame Cathedral. The cathedral was rebuilt in the 1800s — and most of the familiar gargoyles date from that time. This photo is time stamped November 2003.

Retired Gargoyle
This guy is currently not in production. I keep trying as this is most definitely a favorite gargoyle sculpture of mine!

If you see a piece that you like you should consider the possibility that the gargoyle may not be available at a later date! Visit gargoylestore.com today — email servers are standing by!

Timothy A Model of a Real Working Gargoyle

Timothy is a model of a real working gargoyle.

Timothy, A Wall Mount Gargoyle

Here is a picture of Timothy hanging on a wall.

Timothy the Gargoyle Top View Showing the Water Channel
The full size gargoyle would be a stone sculpture extending off the building. The channel along the top (visible in the picture above) would take the water along the gargoyle, out the open mouth, and fall away from the building.

Timothy on a Shelf
Of course, you can put the little guy on a shelf and let him watch you go about your day to day business.

Timothy the Wall Mount gargoyle is made of gypsum cement and is suitable for outside display.

Dedo Gargoyle

I received some Dedo gargoyles — and as it seems the finish changes over time — I thought it best to take a new picture for the website so that anyone is sure to see exactly what it is when they receive their new Dedo gargoyle!

Large Dedo Gargoyle
Here is the picture I just took of the big guy.

I like to use two of whatever I am shooting — so that the viewer gets to see different views in the same shot.

Visit my website and check out Dedo and all the other nice gargoyle statues. The website is gargoylestore.com — and you can visit it here.

Skull Decorated with a Carved Floral Design

This blog is about the gargoyles that I sell on my website and such — but — I also have a good selection of decorative skulls for sale.

Decorative Carved Skull
This skull has a floral pattern that is meant to appear carved, and has a realistic aged bone finish applied. The proper term for this is not a skull as the jaw bone, or mandible is not included — cranium is the correct term.

My website — gargoylestore.com — has a very good selection of skulls, the skulls are on Catalog Section 6, which you can view by clicking HERE.

Please visit and look around!

New Gargoyle in the Store — Tiny Osborne Gargoyle

I have always had larger sizes of the Osborne gargoyle — recently in is  this small size 'Tiny Osborne' gargoyle.

Tiny Osborne Gargoyle
This picture is the Tiny Gargoyle. As you can see in the photo with the penny and quarter as a reference — this is a small, cute little guy.

Tiny Osborne is made of cast stone, good for inside or outside display, and priced at $26.

I think the Osborne gargoyle has a calm, reflective look about him. His eyes along with his clasped hands makes the viewer feel he is patiently watching the world — making sure all is right.

Check out Tiny Osborne on Catalog Section #2 by clicking HERE.

'Down Under' Gargoyle Statues

I sell to International locations rather often. Right now I am packing a box to go to Sweden, and recently I have sent a box of griffins to Lichtenstein! I'm pretty sure that that was my first shipment to Lichtenstein.

Customer Photograph of Gargoyle Statues Purchased from The Stone Griffin
I had a flurry of orders from Australia — and one of the buyers send me two pictures of the gargoyle statues that they got from me.

Customer Photograph of Gargoyle Statues Purchased from The Stone Griffin
This is the second shot. the big guy is called 'Raso,' and the two little guys are called 'Panther Gargoyles.'

I made a mistake on this order — the buyer ordered one each of quite a few gargoyles, but two of the Panther. I did not notice, I only sent one Panther. The buyer noticed my mistake, so I sent the second one down — as you can see in the picture!

Griffins Gryphons Griffons

Gryphons are mythological beasts commonly depicted as having the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle, and the hindquarters, tail and occasionally ears of a lion.

Standing Griffin from The Stone Griffin

They have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance. Military units often have a griffin as their mascot. Griffins are thought to protect one's treasure, which is why the small griffin plaque I sell has the griffin holding a key.

Villa Montalvo's Griffin Logo
Villa Montalvo is an historic landmark in Saratoga, California — and uses the griffin. A griffin is used as a logo, as shown in the above photograph, and as statures on columns flanking entranceways.

Griffin on Villa Montalvo's Entranceway

There are several different accepted spellings—with the three most common being gryphon, griffin and griffon.

Visit my website — gargoylestore.com — and go to Catalog Section 12 to view the griffins.

This Just In! Black Celtic Skull

A new skull has been added to the skull section of the website.

Black Celtic Skull
I call this guy 'Black Celtic Skull,' and that name is pretty descriptive of the piece — a black resin skull with some Celtic patterns on the top of the skull.

This skull is cast solid, so it feels very heavy when picked up.

It is well done, well finished collectible skull.

The height is 5" length (from front to back) is 6.5" and the weight is four pounds, price is $36.

Shelf Full of Gargoyles and Other Pictures

I poked back into the dark corners of my computer and pulled out some old pictures. It takes multiple pictures to get one that I think is just the right one. I thought to post some of the outtakes here, as different views of a gargoyle that one is interested in gives the viewer an even better idea of the gargoyle that can't be done in one view.

Shelf of Gargoyles and Skulls

Here is an photograph of a group of gargoyles on a shelf in the shop. The small skull in the left front center is the Small Celtic Skull. This guy is retired. Going clockwise we come to the Guardian of Hopes and Dreams, the Guardian is 8 1/2" tall. Next clockwise, behind the Guardian is Maxwell. Then the large guy is the Winged Gargoyle. Next is Chester, in the center is the Red Flame Skull.

Florentine Wall Hound Gargoyle
The above picture is the Florentine Wall Hound. This gargoyle hangs on the wall, there is an opening  in the back that sits on a nail.

Skull Toilet Brush

The above picture is the Skull Toilet Brush. I kind of liked this guy, but alas it has been retired. I posted this here to remind you — most all of these pieces are made by individual artists. As they create more work, or for other reasons, they stop offering some work. If you don't get what you see and like, well, you might not get a second chance!

Irving Gargoyle

The different gargoyles I sell called 'Irving' are based on a bass relief gargoyle located on a building on Irving Place in New York, New York.
Irving Place Gargoyle

The picture above is the gargoyle on Irving Place. This is actually not a gargoyle, as a gargoyle by definition is a waterspout — this is more properly called a grotesque, although in common usage the terms are often interchanged.

Irving Gargoyle, Gypsum Stone
The above picture is one of the several different versions of 'Irving' that I sell on my website. You can see the resemblance. Pretty much all my pieces are free standing, so this gargoyle sculpture is a free standing piece.

Browse the website to see the other Irving gargoyles that I have for sale, to go to the website click here.

Percy Gargoyle

I am rather fond of this guy, 'Percy' I call him.

Percy Gargoyle
Percy is a small resin piece, a gray patina with hand painted eyes.

This gargoyle is $19, and to get him jump over to my website gargoylestore.com and you would find this guy on Catalog Page 4.

Bronze Cranium (skull)

This is a new piece for the store, a bronze finished cranium. A skull without the jaw (mandible) is called a cranium.

Bronze Finished Cranium

This piece  is 5" tall, 7" from front to back, and is priced at $36, made of cold cast resin mixed with bronze for a metal look.

I like skulls, and I like this piece — I think it casts an 'eternal' or vintage look out to the viewer.

New Gargoyle Sculpture in the Works!

Here is a 'leaked' photograph of a new gargoyle sculpture in process.

Gargoyle Statue
This guy is being created by special request, and then will be changed a bit perhaps — and I will then have him for sale!

I have no details yet on size or price as yet — stay tuned!

Dedo Gargoyle

We sell the always popular Dedo gargoyle.

Here is his story card:

The "Legend" of Dedo
"It all began in Paris when the Notre Dame Cathedral was being built, rising majestically stone by stone towards the heavens. It was custom to top each structure with a menacing gargoyle, who protected the cathedral by warding off evil spirits.

Marie Therese, a nun from a tiny convent in Provence, disliked the evil-looking gargoyles on the new cathedral, sitting so close to the heavens.Disguised as a man, she trekked on foot to Paris, entered the work site, and quickly carved a small block into a lovable, protective creature. She placed her creature, with its pointy ears and human-like feet, on the highest roof, visible only to God Himself.

It was undiscovered for centuries until a small boy, lost in the labyrinthine structure, stumbled off a ledge and rolled down a roof into the arms of the littlest gargoyle, perched quietly on a ledge. Since that time, Marie Therese's creature was affectionately known as Little Dedo, the gargoyle with the crossed toes."

We sell several sizes and finishes, prices start at $19.

Meeker

This fine little guy we call 'Meeker.' He (or she) is a well cast gargoyle sculpture — designed and made right in the good ole USA.

Meeker is holding his treasure, protecting it.

Meeker Gargoyle Statue
This gargoyle is cast from gypsum cement and so it suitable for outdoor display. Meeker is about four inches tall, and is priced at $46.

The web site has probably six pieces from this fine artist — visit the web site by clicking here.

Thanks for listening!
